UTN Member Security

As part of our ongoing commitment to provide our members with the latest available technological resources, the Utah Telehealth Network provides access to low-cost bandwidth and technical support (801-585-2426). By pooling our resources, most technical support, security, and information privacy is performed by UTN, the UUHSC network and security teams. This service affords most sites considerable savings in IT costs.

UTN Protection Tools

  • Secure email - A Groupwise server scans the contents of email to prevent viruses.
  • Intrustion, Detection, and Prevention - UTN protects members' data networks through extensive firewalls and regularly updated security software.
  • SSL-Virtual Private Networks - UTN members who need access from outside the network may use specialized security software to encypt transmissions.

Prevention

  • Microsoft AntiSpy - Download and run AntiSpy once a week.
  • IDP - UTN's firewall software reports any suspicious activity.

Types of Attacks

  • High - viruses that can eat up lots of bandwidth.
  • Critical - viruses that port scan your network for vulnerabilities.
  • Medium - old forms of known attacks.
  • Low - advertisers install Spyware programs off interesting programs in exchange for monitoring movements across the internet. UTN members' internet traffic may be automatically blocked by UTN's firewall if they download a dangerous Spyware program. They include:
    • MarketScore - a financial stock watcher
    • FunWebProducts - screen savers
    • Whenuclocksync - an internet time clock
    • MiniBug - random cartoon bugs on screen
    • etc. - there are many applications that UTN blocks from reporting
  • Informational - advertisers install Gator programs on a PC that report your movements across the internet to a database. These are not dangerous, but help proliferate popup advertisements.
