Utah Telehealth Network has been developed over the last several years. At the request of Governor Leavitt, the 1995 Utah Legislature approved $200,000 one-time funding to support a pilot project for telemedicine. At the same time, the University of Utah Health Sciences Center established the Telemedicine Outreach Program, developed to link the University with its clinic on the Nevada border. Since that time, the network has been funded by multiple one-time state allocations, federal grants, foundation grants and a significant support from the University of Utah Health Sciences, which is ongoing. State funds, federal grants (TIIAP and OAT) and grants from the two Utah Foundations (Eccles and Dumke) have enabled the network to expand to additional sites throughout rural Utah.

Health care in rural Utah is widely dispersed and limited in scope. Twenty-five out of twenty-nine counties in Utah are rural or frontier counties and all are designated Health Care Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA's). There is a disparate concentration of health care workers and services in the urban counties. In addition there are significant geographic barriers with a rugged topography that requires people in some part of the states to travel in excess of 100 miles one-way for health care.

Because of Utah's unique geography and population distribution, the Utah Telehealth Network is becoming an essential and integral component of the state's and intermountain west's health care system. We continue to grow with expanding technological capabilities, additional sites and network members, as well as clinical, educational and administrative applications.
